The first three classes of the NASCAR Vestibule of Fame mostly have been reserved for the giants of the sport's top series - men with names like Earnhardt, Minor, Pearson and France.

In this year's third induction class, though, is a man named Richie Evans. And if you only occupy oneself with stock-car racing's Sprint Cup series, right now you're wondering: "Richie Who?"

Evans' posthumous induction this week in Charlotte is a winning for all the men who race on half-mile or smaller tracks and work on them at uninspired garages for the joy of it. He is the only one of the 15 men so far elected into the sport's hall with no ties to NASCAR's top series.

"This induction perfectly screams volumes about the importance of local level, short-pursue racing," said Dick Berggren, who covered Evans for years, does NASCAR pit reporting for Fox Sports and serves as director editor for Speedway Illustrated magazine.

Nicknamed the "Rapid Roman" because of his roots in Rome, N.Y., Evans never raced a distinct time in what is now the Cup series. He never got rich by racing, either. But he became the king of the NASCAR Modified section, where he won nine national championships during a 13-year period and established a repute for both working and playing hard.

Dave and Sandy are both powerful members of the South Mountain Conservancy , a volunteer design committed to maintaining and enhancing conditions in the 2,110 acre Provision. Over the history several years I'd observed deposition of their efforts on my almost diurnal hikes—a route cleared of past-failure or happy new blazes to supplant the faded colour splotches on the tree trunks.

I'd often considered getting more affected, but the impulse almost always faded by the period I'd stepped through my door and into the quotidian responsibility of my entity. It was only my growing awareness of the complex issues of the annual deer hunts that in fine pushed me to take some belittling guilt for the forest I so enjoyed....
