Madison and Verona played legion to the U.S. Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships for the first time, bringing some of the very outdo professional and amateur riders in the sport to the area for a series of grueling races at the greensward.

Sunday saw both the men and women’s elite races go off in unseasonably warm temperatures that post-haste rendered the track greasy and muddy, stalling several riders and causing more than a few spills.

Katie Compton cruised conclusively to her 8th consecutive national championship title, beating the second flat rider by nearly two minutes. That silver medal finisher was Compton’s protege and teammate, U23 racer Kaitlin Antonneau from Racine, Wisconsin, who has been making a name for herself as one of the mountains’s best young female racers.
