66th annual Western Intercollegiate: Stanford's Rodgers, Texas roll at Pasatiempo
SANTA CRUZ -- Stanford golfer Patrick Rodgers didn't let Saturday afternoon's 1-over-par up at Pasatiempo Golf Course spoil his fun.
The Cardinal junior came back and tied for Sunday's irrevocable-round low score, firing a 68 to finish at 4 under par and fend off UCLA's wonderful No. 1 ranked amateur Patrick Cantlay and New Mexico Testify's Justin Shin to win the 66th Annual Western Intercollegiate by two strokes. Rodgers didn't well-deserved earn his first medalist honors of the year, but he also got to pull on the Blue Jacket.
"It was a imaginary week, this is an amazing event to win," Rodgers said. "I want to give thanks to my teammates. We had a lot of fun and we're very appropriate to be here."
Rodgers tied for the lowest score on two of the three rounds. He opened Saturday's 36-aperture first round with a 3-under 67, but followed it up in the afternoon with a 1-over 71.
Cantlay -- who one week ago won the low-dabbler title at the Masters -- shot a final-round 68. It wasn't enough, as the UCLA sophomore finished two strokes back to just now miss out on becoming the second player ever to win the Masters Silver Cup and the Blue Jacket in the same year. Five have done it over the tack of their college careers.
