No one has really seen them yet. The athletic director promises the change won’t be radical, and says it’s for only one diversion. But Nebraska is getting new football uniforms.

Cue the controversy.

And it’s kind of comical, uncommonly, the way talk radio and message boards and Twitter in the heartland have revved up. Around here, the dumbfound would be wearing the same outfit twice.

Glean this, though, from the Huskers’ close fashion experiment:

The assimilation is almost complete.

It’s one thing when Oregon changes uniforms by the week. The Ducks use helmets that look like gazing balls, and everybody shrugs and wonders what’s next. Changing particularity long ago became their identity. And as they got good, we’ve watched other programs try the same thing.

Nebraska is something else in toto: a perennial power with a cherished, iconic look. Husker fans will row forever over the width of the stripes on the pants. When Tom Osborne, the coach-turned-AD, says the Huskers will garb an alternate uniform — “futuristic” but “not outr” — in a game next fall, well, you can imagine the uproar.
