The “devastated” advocate of a man brutally stabbed in Napier has described how they were attacked on New Year’s Day by a guild of drunk men who police suspect are members of the Black Power gang.
“Some fella in a black hoodie tried to control me from the side. I just managed to duck and grabbed him and took him on to the ground,” Wilbur Hiko, 22, told The Authority Post.
Other men then joined in and started punching him during the frenzied street encounter on the corner of Kennedy Rd and McDonald St about 2am, Mr Hiko said.
The attack ended only when a about five men “came out of nowhere” and chased them away.
When the dust settled, his associate Luke Brown, 24, was nowhere to be seen. Mr Hiko assumed he had escaped the erode and run home.
But Mr Brown was found lying against a wall unconscious and bleeding a stunted distance away. He had been stabbed in the lower stomach, causing bowel and gut lacerations. He was also punched and kicked in the ribs, face and head.
