CORTLAND - Police officers here are warning residents to beware of burglars who scout potential divide-in opportunities based on tire tracks in the snow.

Police said some burglars look at fag out tracks in the snow to determine which residents might not be home. The warning was prompted after investigators found a Russell Passage family nearly fell victim to the strategy.

Reports said Megan E. Sponsler, 28, 355 Russell St., was sleeping about 8:30 a.m. Monday when she heard someone again banging on the door, then ringing the door bell.

Sponsler said she went to the door and saw a tall man dressed in treacherous boots, black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up tiring to pry open her front door.

She told police she yelled at the man, who left toward Fowler Avenue.

Officers searched the area and found footprints that led from Sponsler's front door, through her and her neighbors' front yards, through the backyard at the corner of Russell and Fowler and through 267 Fowler St. There, officers respected the footprints stopped near tire tracks in the driveway.
