Dakotah Braun's only Christmas sweater reminds her of something her dad might dress.

"It's half-tan, half-green, and has these gross-looking X's and circles that are somehow hypothetical to make a tree pattern," said the 20-year-old Creighton University undergraduate.

Braun has already worn the sweater to one ugly Christmas sweater reception this year, but she said that party trend is growing a little irked.

"We expect them to happen every year, so there really isn't anything cool or exciting about them from year to year," she said.

Bad-tempered sweater parties are thrown mostly by young people who wear their parents' old sweaters decorated with reindeer, trees, Santa, gifts, gingerbread men and other Christmas symbols. The sensation has been going for nearly a decade and is so popular that companies have turned their accustomed Christmas gatherings into the kitschy holiday parties.

In fact, it's caught on so in toto that longtime sweater party organizer Josh Livingston said several of his guests told him his assemblage was the first of multiple Christmas parties they were to attend that night, and all had the ugly sweater study.
