Next Sunday will be 6-month-old Kyran Low for's first Christmas, but there's little under mother Katie Cortez's tree.

The 20-year-old innate, who grew up in foster care, is doing her best to get a college highly and become a social worker while taking care of Kyran and looking for a job to guy him.

Even with help from Kyran's father, it's a bleak Christmas this year.

Cortez would liking to give her son a toy box filled with baby and toddler toys. She'd love to have a bookshelf filled with children's books that she could review to him. She'd also like practical things, such as diapers, clothes and gift cards for groceries.

Kyran and Cortez are part of the Austin American-Statesman's Ripen for Caring campaign, which helps 10 featured families and hundreds more like them through townsman nonprofit agencies. As of Wednesday, the campaign had raised more than $166,000 this year.

Kyran is the youngest babe in the Season for Caring campaign this year, but some of the older children would sweetie a bright Christmas as well.
